Show W. DUANE PARKER WIN: B.A.R. is the Italian automatic? DUA: No, it was an American automatic rifle that fired very fast and accurate. WIN: So it was a machine gun? brua 14 2 2 DUA: Well, it was more like a rifle than a machine gun, but it shot fast, and it was a great weapon. WIN: And, so, they were probably a little upset at you? DUA: Absolutely. I would have been upset if somebody had been shooting at me and they shouldn't be. End of side one of tape WIN: On the other side of the tape we just related the experience you had being on an outpost, an observation post, and the patrol-one of our United States army patrols- had been out, and you hadn't been given the information, or the password. DUA: We hadn't been informed about this patrol. WIN: Nobody had told you, and you had opened fire on them. That was one experience that you had. What would be then a typical activity during the day while you were in that area? Did they have a mess tent, or mess facilities set up? DUA: No. All we did was live on sea rations, and that's not good stuff. WIN: So breakfast, sea rations? DUA: Yeah, everything. WIN: Lunch, sea rations? DUA: Yup. WIN: Dinner, sea rations? You didn't have a mess tent? DUA: No. WIN: So you were in the little village. Were there Italian villagers there also, or did you have that to yourself? DUA: I don't think there was any families in this particular village at that time. I think there was partisans; they were in some of the buildings, and there wasn't very many buildings in this little village at that time. 24 |
