Show W. DUANE PARKER F bruary 1 2002 WIN: Riva Ridge. DUA: Riva Ridge was our objective for the next attack. WIN: Which was part of the Gothic Line; the German northern defense place where they made their last stand up there in Northern Italy, right? DUA: Yes. And then every unit had assigned areas where they were going to attack. I was in Company A ofthe 86th, and we were the detached platoon. Our Company A was clear back over here. Let's see., just to give you some details, the ridge- I'lllet you read it. This was the ridge, and it's commonly called Riva Ridge. This was the name of the whole ridge (looking at a picture of Riva Ridge). WIN: So it's called the Mansenello Camp Biano Ridge, and it's called the Riva Ridge? DUA: Yes, that's the common name for it. WIN: And that was at just the end of the ridge? DUA: Yes, the far end. It was closest to Mount Belvedere. So that's where they had their artillery observers to watch Mount Belvedere. WIN: Now, was this occupied at that time by Germans? DUA: Absolutely. Every bit. In fact, I didn't know how extensive it was at the time, but 40 years after the end of the war we went with the 1Oth Mountain on a tour to the area. The 1Oth Mountain is taking tours back over to the area every three to five years, back to visit the areas where we fought. My wife Rosslyn and I took this tour and went with them. And we had a friend, one of the officers that was in the outfit, when we went on this tour over there. He had his family with him, and he rented a van to haul his family. It followed the bus that we were on. And, so, one day he took several of us in that van, and we went over here on the backside of Riva Ridge, which was the German side. It isn't as steep on that side. And back over in here there is a road that goes up, and it will take you right up into here where A Company was. So we went that day with him, and then I was interested in down here because that's where I was, on the far end of Riva Ridge. WIN: Your detached platoon was on the other end? 26 |
