Show W. DUANE PARKER brua 14 20 2 WIN: Okay, again on the line. Were you moving? Had the Gothic defensive line broken by then? DUA: Oh, yeah. WIN: So you were just starting to move north. DUA: Yes, on the 3rd of March. And that was a tough day. We stated seven foxholes that day. WIN: Get tired digging, wouldn't you? Get blisters? DUA: All over my hand was absolutely one big blister; a big, raw blister. And that was the day- 1 don 't know if you've heard ofTorger Tokle. He was a Norwegian. He had just gotten his citizenship paper by the time we got to Italy, and he held the world championship ski jumping record at that time. And on the 3rd of March it was my birthday. That was my 19th birthday on the 3rd of March. And he got killed that day as we were going along. Of course, not this ridge; that has nothing to do with it now. We were all spread out over this whole ridge; up on top, and down on the side. He happened to be a platoon leader, and his platoon was up on top of the ridge. My platoon was down on the side of the ridge. And artillery shells kept coming in all around us. He and his bazooka man were knocking out a machine gun nest. They had bazooka rounds with them, and an artillery burst came in and got a tree burst, and the shrapnel exploded the bazooka rounds and blew them both to smithereens. His helmet rolled right down the hill to where I had hit the dirt on the side of the mountain. WIN: Really? DUA: And from then on it was just-we were on the line, and on and off just to get a little relief. And that went on until about the 1st of April. WIN: When did you reach the Poe River? DUA: Well, I didn't get to the Poe. WIN: You never got up there, huh? DUA: They went into the Poe Valley on the 19th of April. WIN: On the 19th. 33 |
