Show W. DUANE PARKER DUA: Oh, we had lifeboat drills, walked the decks, played cards watched movies, and read. WIN: Was there anything for you to do, or were you just sitting around? DUA: They had movies all the time. WIN: They had movies on board? rua 14 2002 DUA: Yeah, they did. And I think I recall there was some entertainment, you know. They had some entertainers there-singers, or something. I don't recall for sure. Whenever I could I spent my time on the deck, weather permitting when you could. WIN: You're going over in the early winter, basically, so you must have had some bad weather. DUA: Yeah, it was. And it was cold at times. WIN: Whenever you could you'd get up and catch a little sun? DUA: Yes. I hated to be in that hole. WIN: You wouldn't have been good in the navy, would you? DUA: No. Well, I don't know. I probably could have. I mean I got over the seasickness. That was the only time. I never got seasick at all coming back. WIN: Okay. Well, so the trip wasn't exactly a pleasure cruise, but you made it. DUA: Yes. WIN: So you got over to Naples and up into that unfmished college with the cold marble floors? DUA: Right. WIN: Okay. How long did they keep you at Naples? DUA: We spent Christmas Eve in that building, and on the 25th they loaded us on trucks and took us to a railroad siding and put us on boxcars; what they called over there 40 or 8's, forty men or eight horses. WIN: Forty or eight? DUA: I think we only had about 25 men and all our gear, but they were still crowded. WIN: It was really crowded? 18 |
