Show UTAH-. _ . „..;{;,.Haymond Equals World's Record, 220 yard dash, 2l£ seconds.Track, 1914 -15A well balanced group of track and fleld athletes coupled with the exceptional ability on the part of a few of the men, gave Utah the state collegiate championship and sustained her reputation in the conference as the home of world beaters. Despite our array of talent, uncertainty hovered about every meet, for the other colleges were' equally favored. The annual dual meets were unusual, and that with the Agricultural College was exceptionally close. Not until the last two events were over, was Utah certain of victory. At the close of the meet, which was replete with exciting finishes, Utah was secure with a thirteen point lead.We had little difficulty with the Brigham Young University. In this meet we appropriated ten first places, together with enough other points to raise the score to eighty, leaving the Provo boys forty points as their share. With the dual meets over the outcome of the state meet still remained in doubt. The dope favored the Agricultural college and Coach Norgren practically conceded the victory to the farmers But Utah surprised herself. Her fifty-two points, including seven firsts', was enough to establish her claim to the championship. The work of Creed Haymond, Utah's phenomenal sprinter, was our most creditable asset. In the state meet he ran the century event in state record time, and equalled the world's record :n the 220. He was the sensation of the conference meet held in Denver on May 22, winning the 100 yard dash in record time, and the 220 in two and two-tenths seconds-a new conference record. Eight men men were responsible for Utah's 22 5-6 points as third place in the Conference meet.Page one hundred thirty-four |
