Show After It! After It! Follow the GleamTHE OEDEE OF THE GLEAM tries to be like the Scribblers. Their motto is: "After it, after it, follow the Gleam." The girls insist that they enjoy listening to such papers as "Needle work under the Pharaohs." Every leap year the Gleam conducts a series of papers on "How to Propose," but this is innocent play-mere frivolity, for they despise such sordid thing's as marriage.THE SCRIBBLERS CLUB (petitioning- Sigma Upsilon) is made up of the literati universitatis. They attack Christianity, patriotism, women, and their own members-having- ex-communicated several in order to qualify for a national charter. They also help the Gleam pay Miss Williams for writing plays. The rest of their money they spend as follows: A banquet at the end of the year and the mounting and framing of their pictures-this, to adorn the men's rest room.Brothers on the JobBrother Nordvall Brother CarlsonBrother Johnson Brother Swenson Brother De BryBrother Forsberg//:///// If/////////. /J////%\' 1The Scribblers Club's Petition to Sigma UpsilonThe Ritual of the Gobblers Club"Let us begin the ceremony. Candidate, know ye that this is no mean or superficial organization into which you are about to be initiated. This great brotherhood began in the days of Solomon. At that time, if a Gobbler was walking down the street accompanied by two women, he need only give the signal of distress, whereupon a brother would advance and relieve him of half of his burden, which is of course necessary." (Here the candidate is shown the distress signal and also the first grip of the fraternity which is essentially a Portuguese pump motion.)"Candidate, the motto of this organization is 'Veritas,' meaning truth. Now in order to become a full fledged brother, you must answer one question, bearing in mind the motto-truth. Are you ready for the question?""Have you ever ->--<- ------¦--?"If the candidate answers "yes," he is shown the final secret grip and is known as a lay member and an honest man.If the candidate answers "no," he is shown the grip and becomes a high exhalted ruler and the darndest liar on the face of the earth.Page two hundred fifty-four |
