The course aims to harmonize the conflicting elements in science and religion. Instructor Hermon Wells.Logic: A course in the processes of deductive and inductive logic, "with practical application to the conduct of the Board of Regents, the Alumni association, Nelson H. Norgren ,and a study of the cogency of the faculty's action in suppressing the Bull (Durham advertising) in the Chronicle.The class meets annually as a board of protest. No faculty supervision.Ethics of Fussing: A study of the practical problems of fussing, including the individual virtues of the ideal fusser, the nature of an environment conducive to unrestrained emotional expression, and the specific reactions which should follow from certain definite stimulations. Adapted to male Freshmen.Meets every night, Chi Omega House. Instruction by the inmates.Ethical Literature: A study of selections from the most famous modern writers on morals. "Three Weeks," "Ten Night in a Bar Room," "The Blindness of Virtue," "Emile" are among the required readings of the course with supplementary instruction from "Snappy Stories," "The Improvement Era," and "The Little White Slaver."Daily in Women's Rest Room. Dean Lucy Van Cott.Tobaccology 1. This course consists of the theory and practice of smoking tobacco. The student is taught to discriminate between good and bad cigarettes and cigars and will be judged largely on his practical inhaling ability, and not much on theory.Alcoholism 1. This course embraces, "what to drink, how to drink, how to mix drinks, how to cultivate a capacity, and how to care for yourself and other inebriates. The theories learned in the classroom will be applied in the laboratory. We have a large and spacious laboratory with all modern conveniences. During the year many field trips are made to the various breweries and saloons in this vicinity.Students showing exceptional ability will be made assistants in these subjects.Ethics 28-Picturesque ProfanityThe purpose is to replace such barbarisms as "hell" and "dam" with beautiful and inoffensive oaths like "by junxta position," taken from the best authors. Applicants for this course should be able to read an illustrated edition of Maupassant or "Les Fleurs du Mai" fluently and without blushing.
