CARL SAMUELSONBecause of the great difficulties attending so elaborate a production as "Aida," the University Musical Society's opera will come later than usual this season. The opera chosen is Verdi's masterpiece, "Aida," a heroic Egyptian pagaent requiring a cast of four hundred people. The dates of production will be May 28, 29, and 30, chosen to accommodate Vernon Stiles, the tenor from the Royal Opera houses of Vienna and Petrograd, who has been procured to sing the leading role. The magnificent scenery and costumes of the San Carlo Opera Company of New York have been leased and a metropolitan stage director will superintendent the performances.Professor Thomas G'iles is conductor -with Cavendish W. Cannon, assistant. Miss Leone Amott is accompanist for the rehearsals and Miss Lucile Rogers has charge of the dancers. The chorus will number 125 and will be further increased by the Ensign Stake male chorus under the direction of Prof. H. E. Giles, the Hand Opera chorus and a ladies' chorus under the direction of Mrs. Esther Davis Stephens. Mr. T. Earl P'ardoe is the stage manager.Page one hundred nine |
