Show 366 367 CHAIRMAN Moomi: Mr. Robert C. Root. of Los Angeles, California, will tell us of the Pacific Coast r-\;;vcncy oi the American Peace Society. (Applause) are some of the things we did. They are indicative of some of the things we propose to do in the future. We have had three peace con ferences. and out of those three conferences have been organized two peace societies; the North- ern California l'cacc Society with titty charter members, in- clndinler l'resident \Vheeler, of the University of California. and The Pacific Coast Agency of the American Peace Society Mn. ltrnaiirr C. Roor i may be pardoned possibly for a single reference to California. As we come from sunny southern California to this less sunny land we sympathi7e with you who do not live there. \Ve have so many good things we would like to tell you about, that if I wire to attempt to tell _\/ u about all of those delightful things you might classify me as the small boy classified the man who ( nw to the itnee stirronndnnt his fathers tield one (lav and asked the hot Hdl‘t‘ questions, 'l‘liis man came up to the cornfield and sail to the hoy: "Your corn looks yellow." "Yes, that is the kind we planttd." llut the man looked again at it and saw that ll was net may well cultivated and he said: "\Vell. you won't get more than half a (top. will you?" "No," he said, "we don't esptrt to. 'l'he landlord gets the other half." The tnan looked at the small hoy again and said: ‘ loy. there isn't very much hetwu-n you and a fool‘ is there?" "No. only a fence," replied the how (I anehter.) Now if l were to go on and tell vou all about t ornia you would want to classilv me as the small boy i did his friend ' '., . .., hat I am hut ' " to llll yt-u ahnnt thr- l'aenic Coast Avencv \\'e heliue _ in ("d' ..llttlltt.l ' ' in i t h 'is 1 n o\._..nut . tor i ‘ ptaet -' H i andh good i. will, and mun-w > ins :11‘eputt 1' tier hearts and hands and heads and (‘\('l_\lllll'_L' tlse that lti‘littl1‘_\ to us into the work \\'e are - n\ to do i- thaws. ; ll\ I >1I ‘ :.snine of us \\ ' e lttn e tlr= i . That spirit is in tlze peace wt riters out on the llacitic Coast and these a number of his leading professors: the mayor of the city of Eerkeley, the postmaster, six or seven of the leadingY diyines, the leadingr bankers of the city and a number of prominent representatives of other callings in life. In Los Angelcs we organized the Southern California Peace Society, startingr with thirtyvtwo mem- bers one year and two months ago, but we now have one hundred and ninety»two paid-up members in Los Angeles and we expect to have several hundred before the campaign ends. \\'c have had Hague Day in six of our high schools in southern California and one hundred and ten public schools or gram~ mar schools in that part of the state. Our state superintendent and the county superintendent of Los .r\ng'eles t‘onnty have told me in response to letters sent to them that they will urge the observance of Hague Day this year in the public schools of the state and county. Hague llay programs were sent to every county and city superintendent of schools in California. liight or ten Hague Day speakers have been secured for the coming Hague Day program in southern ('alit'ornia schools. We have distrihnted all over the state of California and the Pacific Coast duringr the past year over sixty thousand pages of peace literature. octavo pages. among others that magnificent answer of Dr. john De liorest to Richmond l'. llobson. 'l‘lmt able answer, "The Truth .\lwut Japan," is scattered up and down the Pacific Coast by the hundreds. ;\ peace literature exhibit was made at the city and county school superintendents' biennial Convention at Lake Tahoe last September. where, all of the city, county and school superintendents of (_‘.'ilit'ornia were gathered in convention for three or four days. We had also at the Orange County 'l‘eaehers' Insti- tute a like exhibit. in Los Aliqelcs we had at the Los Angeles and Ventura Joint County 'learhers' institute another exhibit, and at the Southern California Teachers' Association that met in Lot: Ange- nnnin MHMWH |
