Show FLOOD SITUATION IN UTAH flood control in Utah aa a definite project began in 1982 when the Bureau of Agricultural Engineering in cooperation with the Utah Experiment Station and the Utah Extension Serrioe undertook to devise a means of providing control for floods and for gravel and sand moving in a stream at high water time at Salt Creek near Nephlo This undertaking was financed by the local Irrigation Company* It proved to be very effective, both In checking the flow of gravel into canals and ditches at high water time and in equalizing the floods from torrential downpour such aa occurred on August 3, 1923 when Farming- ton and Wlllard sustained such extensive loss « The same storm extended to Nephl and caused a flood similar to the one which occurred at Farmington and at Wniard ]> ut the control structures reduced the peak flow to such an extent that the channel down stream was able to handle the entire runoff of water; the heavy debris having been deposited above the- flood barrierso In 1923 similar control works to those installed at Nephi were built at Cnalk Creek near Fillmore, at Corn Creek near Kenosh and on Shoal Creek near Enterprise• Ihese structures cost on an average of $! 5 OGO- CC or less all in labor. In 1924 following the floods at Wlllard end Farmington spring high water could not be held within the newly made channels which had been dug by steam shovels on account of excessive boulder and gravel flowo Accordingly flood control barriers were built at each place under a cooperative arrangement between the various interests involved, including the State Highway Commission, the County Commissioners of each County, the railroads and interurban lines and the local water userso A more permanent form of spillway structure was devised which called for rubble masoruty of boulders and concreteo |
