During that year tBe $5,000 appropriated for thepay of the judges by act of June 29,1888 (25 Stats., 233), gave to the courts legislative recognition, .and to the judges small salaries, ranging from $3 to $8 per month,during 8 seven months of the year. During the fiscal >:ear just closed a similar appropriation of $5,000 has been carefully husbanded and distributed; and by closing the court for one-third of the time, thus restricting its sessions to eight months in the year, and by paying the ninety-three judges not exceeding $8 per mouth, and in several.instances reducing the pay to $5 and even $3 per mouth, the office has been able to maiu-tain the court a t tme ~ t ~ f i vagee ncies. For the current fiscal year an appropriation of $10,000 has been made, which will enable the ofice to maintain these courts during twelve months at twenty-six agencies and to pay the judges' salaries as fol-lows: Fiftx-five judges at $10 per month, ten at $8 permonth, twenty-t, hree at $5 per month, and ten at $3 per month.
