The paper never lacked for controversial subjects. Indeed, the Chrony had its hands full after the Board of Regents ordered the removal of nude portraits from the Union foyer. Issues were abundant not only in the realm of art but also in the field of politics and economics. Fulton Lewis, Jr.. a well-known spokesman for the Republican right wing, matched wits with student politicians in an extended question and answer period. Dr. J. D. Williams debated Ross Barnett, former governor of Mississippi in what was one of the most popular political sidelights of the year. Chronicle reporters previewed a new program of psychiatric guidance at the Student Health Center. Feature editors discovered several trout missing from the Union fish pond. Sports writers got a break on conference-winning Ute swimming team but still had to report a dismal picture of students stacked outside the fieldhouse unable to view the season's best games. In short, the year will be remembered as a newsman's holiday. |
