Show The Utah Symphony Whether appearing at special assemblies or programs, or at regular season performances in the Tabernacle, the Utah Symphony Orchestra was enjoyed immensely by University students and all who were privileged with hearing this outstanding group of musicians. Presenting a panoramic scope of music dating from the old masters-Mozart, Beethoven, and Hayden, and extending to the contemporary artists-Stravinsky and Gould- the Symphony has truly outdone itself in bringing all phases of great music to please all tastes in good music. The Symphony featured guest artists: Zara Nelsova, famed Cellist; Rise Stevens, performing selections from "Carmen/' with which her name has become synonomous; Reid Nibley, Pianist; Clifford Curzon, Pianist; and Violinist, Fredell Lack. The most recent work of Leroy Robertson, head of the Music Department, was premiered by Miss Nelsova in what was perhaps the highlight of the season for the desciples of the quiet genius that has been responsible for so many recent contributions to music literature. Nationally recognized for his work in building the Symphony up to its present rank as one of the finest in America, Maestro Maurice Abravanel celebrated his tenth year as Symphony director and conductor, during this 1956-57 season. 110 |
