R. 839 The rapid at the head of Narrow Canyon, about a half mile below Cataract Canyon, was much worse on the second trip than on the first trip. This rapid was run, however, and Mr. Lint, who had had considerable boating experience on Salmon River, handled one of the boats. Tasker possibly took one of the boats through. After passing through Narrow Canyon, the party stopped for the night at the John Hite ranch, about eight miles below the Dirty Devil River. After they had stopped, four cattlemen came to the cabin, one of whom lived there and ranged cattle in that section. At this place there were bottom lands on the banks of the river and a road or trail leading up to the mesas. R. 840. From John Hite's ranch down to the mouth of the San Juan, LaRue and Page took one of the boats and the other boats were handled by the balance of the party. Considerable trouble was encountered because of sand bars - there were lots of sand bars. It was always a guess as to where the channel was located and its location could not be told from appearances of the water.
