Show 334 He has never been from Greenriver to Lee's Ferry overland. He together with Bert Loper, made a trip on the Grand River in a Peterboro freight canoe from Glenwood springs, down to Grand Junction, and on down through Westwater Canyon, which is short distance inside the Utah line. Previous to this trip be made another trip with John Shield in the same canoe but on this trip the boat was hauled around Westwater Canyon. This trip was made in 1916. ( Note: Attention called to sheet 51, exhibit 94, Vol. 5 - p. 857; attention called to p. 1, exhibit 90, Vol. 5 - p. 858; attention called to hydrograph on sheet 27 exhibit 97) R. 855- 858 The first trip he made on the Grand River by witness was as far down as Moab, Utah, this trip down the Grand commenced at Delta, Colorado, August 18th, 1916. In Westwater Canyon, the canoe was taken out of the river and portaged around to the end of the rapids. They then continued on down the Grand River to a point below the Rio Grand pumping plant that furnishes water for the station at Cisco. The canoe was eighteen feet long, three and one- half foot beam, weighed about hundred pounds, carried a load of not over three hundred pounds, excluding the men, and it drew four and one- half inches of water loaded, including operators.
