Show 293 They had hit some little riffles in there that they called rapids, " because we hadn't seen any real rapids, or hadn't taken our boat into any real rapids. R. 770. There is Flaming Gorge, Horshoe and Kingfisher Canyons; that are not more than twelve miles in length. Major Powell named them when he went through. There was a little quiet water and park below the short canyons then they came to Red Canyon which, he believes, is about sixty miles in length and it had some bad rapids in it. R. 770. " Q. What do you mean by bad rapids? " A. Bad rapids in most cases up there are caused by side canyons which come in in the flood stages, washed rocks of all sizes up to ten feet in diameter into the river; they dam the river; there is a great deal of silt as well washed into it, and it causes quiet water above that point, and the water spreads out possibly a quarter of a mile, sometimes shorter, sometimes a third of a mile, and it causes violent water going over those rocks. " Q. Now, at any place in that stretch did you line your boats? I am referring from the Utah line to the Colorado line. " A. Yes, there was one rapid at the lower end of Red Canyon, I am not sure, I think it was called Vermillion Creek, a rapid that caused us trouble, and one boat was run through and hit rocks, and another boat was lined through. Then there was another rapid where one boat was taken through and the other boat was lined through. My brother had more experience than I. His boat was run through where mine was lined."
