Show 264 " A. Yes, it had changed entirely. " Q. And that is what you mean when you speak of changing channels, is it? " A. To make it clear to you, for instance, going down we would have a channel probably fifty feet wide going down, and when we came back up, this fifty- foot channel I speak of wouldn't admit of the boat coming back up, because the sand bars and the gravel had shifted, hence, we had to take the other side, where we found more water. " Q. Now Mr. Lumnsden, do you know whether the sand had shifted or whether the volume of water had changed? " A. The volume of water should be more; we had more when we came back up than when we went down; the river was rising instead of receding." R. 682- 683. " Q. Can you tell me where this place was that you refer to? " A. No. There was good many different places on the river; several." R. 683. Further Examination - ( R. Vol. 4 - pp. 684- 686.) BY THE SPECIAL MASTER: " Q. Was the reason you could not get up this slide on the Colorado River because you didn't have sufficient power to your engines? " A. That is really what happened, judge; our power wouldn't steam this cataract. A few places we couldn't make it at all; I don't know of any other boat that could have made it.
