Show 313 simply said he made a mistake, if one missed it and the other didn't it was a job on him. That is the note I made, - " Struck one sand bar. " R. 823- 824 Trouble was encountered at the Double- Bowknot, which was reached at 10: 55 A. M. on the second day. Similar trouble was encountered in Labyrinth Canyon where the out- board motor was taken off the boat because of such trouble and because the speed of the boat with the use of the motor was too fast to change the course of the boat quickly enough to follow the over changing and twisting channel or to prevent running on to sand bars. R. 824- 825 " Q. Did you have any more trouble with the sand bars in Labyrinth Canyon? " A. Yes, we did. This motor I speak of, it was on a hinge, or was arranged so when we would run on to anything it would some up, and it wouldn't injure it. But we had difficulty frequently of that kind, because our speed was greater than it was with the row boats, and sometimes we knew there was a channel, but didn't have a chance; it wouldn't steer quick enough to make that channel, - wouldn't make the turn quickly enough, and would run on to a sand bar. More often, though, it was because we didn't know just where the channel was and where the deep water was. In this Double- Bowknot that I speak of, there are raised centers in the river, the sand bars protrude above the river; they make islands, covered in high |
