Show 302 rapids of Cataract Canyon, and Cataract Canyon is a little over forty miles in length, and has forty- five bad rapids. I believe that is the record of the geological survey. R. 792. " Q. Did you run these rapids in Cataract Canyon? " A. We ran every rapid in Cataract Canyon. " Q. Did both of you run every one? " A. Yes sir. " Q. Didn't line your boats on a one? " A. We didn't take our boats out of a single rapid, and we have always bragged about it, that we had quite an adventure, and got through without any serious difficulty. R. 792. " Q. Did you make an examination of those rapids before you ran them? " A. It is customary, if you are careful at all, to get out above every bad rapid, tie the boat up, walk down almost to the bottom of it, look upstream very carefully; in that muddy water, looking upstream, one can locate the hidden rocks by the action of the water; looking downstream it is very difficult to tell whether it is a rock or whether it is just a wave caused by a deep rock. " We would try to remember where those rocks were, and sometimes we would go back two or three times before we could satisfy ourselves that we would remember the channel. " Q. So I will have it straight on the record, you and your brother actually examined these rapids in Cataract Canyon before you ran them? " A. Yes, we did that, I think, in every bad rapid, and we would make about ten miles a day through those rapids for |
