Show 281 " Q. How would you start the water under the boat? " A. Work from above the boat and down, had to go under it some corner, some place, get the current started. When the boat hit the sand it made a dead water right there; we start in on one side and work with the shovels until we gets started. Didn't take long to cut it when it gets started once. That is the way we worked it. We made a line tight, so the boat couldn't move, and managed to get started, and in that way it will work loose. " Q. In order to do the work with a shovel in there, was it necessary that somebody get in the water? " A. Oh, yes, we all got out and worked hard all around, everybody worked that could. " Q. The whole crew? " A. Yes. If we didn't hold the boat up there until the water got washed under that boat, if you let it float, you get it tighter and tighter; if you hold the boat up there and get the water away from it, you get a channel through and get loose. R. 728- 730. After leaving the mouth of the Green River the party proceeded up the Colorado River as far as the slide, where the boat was thrown back out of its course and onto the bank. After looking the situation over it was decided that it would be impossible to take the boat up the slide and the trip back to Greenriver was started. R. 730- 731. |
