Show 279 difficulty in making the trip except that it was hard rowing. At Moab they left the boat took the stage back to Thompson, Utah. The City of Moab was launched at Greenriver on the fifth or sixth of May, 1905. Two or three days after the launching, the trip down the river was started, Some trouble was bad in launching the boat since it got stuck in the mud and it took two or three days to get it out. The first trouble encountered on the cruise occurred just below the railroad bridge on a riffle known as the Ferry riffle, where the boat hit the rocks. Other riffles were encountered all the way down to the mouth of the Green River and the boat struck bottom at many times. Considerable trouble was experienced in handling the boat inasmuch as the water was very swift and they had to ride with the current and take chances. R 723- 726. By the Special Master: " Q. Who steered the boat? " A. I did. By Mr. Blackmar: " Q. In that stretch of the river is the channel straight. " A. No, it turns all around, every direction; one minute you are on this side; the next you are over on the other side; the current will turn right over on a bar, drop over on that side; and the next minute go over on a bor on that side; you can't tell where it is; you have got to change around all the time. " Q. Did you take any soundings of the water as you went down? |
