Mr. Howland's purpose in going on the river with him, ( Galloway) was specifically for inspecting the river to see if it could be used for purpose of navigation with a steam boat. He and his brother had conversed some with Howland concerning the conditions of the river between North Wash and Lees Ferry prior to the trip. R. 1097- 1101. The last rapid in Cataract Canyon from North Wash is probably ten or twelve miles. There is more swift water between the mouth of North Wash and Lees Ferry than there is on the Green above its confluence with the Colorado. There are some rapids even in Glen Canyon. R. 1102- 1103. " Q. There is a greater depth of water? " A. On those riffles; there is something I have never been able to understand; I have encountered difficulties just the same there as I have above, where there is less water on shallow places. " Q. But you have encountered fewer difficulties? " A. Well, I don't know as to that. I find in boating that river the conditions are where you find them; that is all I can say; you run into it where you least expect it. " Q.
