Show 464 On a recent trip made between Moab and the mouth of the Green River with Mr. Ryan and Colonel Dent, the usual difficulty in navigation was encountered in places because of sand bars both down end up the river. He also remembers a trip taken by Mr. Hoyt, a government engineer, at which time he ( Baldwin) met Hoyt at the mouth of the Green River and helped him get up the Colorado River to Moab. On that trip they were stuck on sand bare in several places. he delivered a boat for Mr. Hoyt for that trip at the mouth of the San Rafael, taking the boat by truck from Moab to Greenriver, then down the west side of the Green River to the San Rafael. R. 1187- 1188. " Q. Was the boat Launched there? " A. We couldn't get it to the river in the truck, by a mile; we thought we would put it in the San Rafael; thought enough water in there to float it down to the river; six or eight hundred pounds of stuff in it; found out we couldn't get anywhere; we had to take it out and shove the boat on to the river, and carry the stuff to the river. R. 1188- 1189. " Q. Why didn't you deliver that boat to Mr. Hoyt by taking it down the Colorado River and then up the Green, instead of bringing it overland? " A. It is about one hundred and twenty miles from Greenriver, the town of Greenriver to the junction, sixty five miles from Moab down the Colorado, I guess, going down stream the longest distance and up stream the mortest, probably. " Q. The reason you did it was because it could be done cheaper and quicker that way? " A. I think so. |
