Show 401 was taken at about the head of Cataract Canyon. ( Small Letters) RE- DIRECT EXAMINATION ( R. Vol. 6 - pp. 1032- 1037) While on the Colorado River his survey party operated two small boats for the purpose of crossing back and forth. They were row boats, one of them being roughly fifteen feet long, four feet wide, and would drew loaded, in his opinion, about twelve inches of water. The other boat be did not use and was not familiar with its dimensions. He crossed the river four of five times at a point between Kane Creek anticline and the Shafer anticline just below what was called Sorghum Camp. During these crossings he had cession to observe the conditions of the river bed. R. 1032- 1033 " Q. Just tell us what you found there, what you saw. " A. Well, we had considerable trouble during some of the crossings; we had to carry a survey line across the river at one location, and we sent John Shafer over with the rod and the boat; he was alone in the boat; he tied the boat on the bank of the river and went up to the mean where he was going to give us the burning point. R. 1033. While he was doing up towards the turning point we heard splashing noises along the river, and we saw the bank was caving, the river was cutting into the banks, and it would cave off big chunks of sand into the river, and we also noticed that is was saving right where this man had tied his boat. |
