Show COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH ABSTRACTS TRAFFIC EFFECT OF GREEN STREET Tianhua Sun (Richard J. Porter) Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering University of Utah Cities throughout the United States are considering and implementing Green Infrastructure strategies. Green infrastructure strategies use ecological, social, and economic methods to build and retain a sustainable ecosystem. Green Streets are one of the important types of Green Infrastructure. Green streets are intended to store and clean storm water, purify the atmosphere, reduce the effect of unban heat island, calm traffic and perform other environmental services. To approach these purposes, several specific methods are applied and implemented to the existing roads, such as on-street parking, lane narrowing, storm water curb extensions and other methods. This research project was aimed at determining h o w Green Street ideas impact traffic operations and safety. In the first part of this research, performed during the summer of 2012, a detailed review of existing Green Infrastructure strategies was conducted. Published information from authoritative, official, and academic sources was reviewed. Experiments and observational studies were collected, organized, and assessed to determine what is known and unknown regarding the effect of Green Street design on traffic operations and safety. During the research, the greatest problem is to deal with and organize abundant information from different sources and perspectives. From this research, an overview of green infrastructure strategies and the traffic effects of Green Streets were documented. |
