Show THE UNIVERSITY OF UTAH UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT EXPERTS ON TEACHING MARS FOR EARTHLINGS: APPLYING HYBRID TEACHING TECHNIQUES TO INTRODUCTORY EARTH SCIENCE COURSES Levi Huish (Margie Chan, Julia Kahmann-Robinson) Department of Geology and Geophysics University of Utah Teaching is a dynamic field in which educators strive to create an appropriate classroom setting, teaching style, and course materials that will best assist students in their education. In 2010 Dr. Marjorie Chan of the University of Utah, with support from NASA, began to develop an introductory Earth science class called,'Mars for Earthlings'.The goal of this project has been to provide undergraduate students knowledge of Mars planetary science, which stems from our ability to interpret Mars data. With this foundational curriculum of Earth science used in this course, students can more completely understand and interpret Mars data. In order to enhance teaching techniques, the project is targeted in developing online "lecture" content for the benefit of the student's learning. Online resources prepare students to spend the traditional class time doing engaging classroom activities and hands-on applications based on the preparatory content. This student involvement has promoted more understanding, learning, and continued interest in the coursework (integrated planetary and earth science). Based on the effectiveness of the hybrid teaching technique, a n e w and improved method of teaching can be further developed in more Earth science courses.
