Show COLLEGE OF SOCIAL WORK CONNECTING BURMESE REFUGEES TO THE SALT LAKE COMMUNITY Kayla Jenson, Esad Ferhatbovic (Trinh Mai) College of Social Work University of Utah Although ethnic groups from Burma, like the Karen, are the second largest group of refugees accepted into the US each year, little is known about them by the American majority. (McGinnis. 2012) Besides experiencing language and cultural barriers in their new environment, they also may feel a disconnect because their cultural background is unknown by their new community. To help them acculturate into society they have asked that a documentary be made of their experiences and used as an education tool by the local community. Some of the similarities between experiences in Salt Lake has been language and employment issues while in Thailand commonalities have been with food shortage and safety issues. Interviews with Karen people were conducted in Thailand and in Salt Lake City. Footages of the film will be shown and re-occurring themes will be presented. Kayla Jenson Trinh Mai 101 |
