"Why I" was the theme for this year's Challenge Week program, and it accented student involvment in today's modern world. Capacity crowds followed speakers as they presented such programs as "UFO's-Do They Deserve Space," "The Courts-Defenseless Scapegoat for the Crime Rate," "The New Breed- Who Am I?" "Tax the Church," and "Southeast Asian Dominoes-A Dangerous Game," to name a few. Madalyn Murray O'Hair, the nation's best known atheist and the most controversial one, exceeded all expectations and drew the largest crowd ever recorded in the Union Ballroom. Dynamic and impressive speakers added to the impact of Challenge Week by representing a wide variation of interests and backgrounds. Among these challenging speakers were: Russell Johnson, a Methodist minister who has definite ideas about Viet Nam; Dr. Robert Scalapino, a political scientist from the University of California at Berkeley who spoke on the current revolution in China; and Arthur S. Flemming, President of the University of Oregon who spoke on academic freedom.
