But the scrambling Utes put their support behind soph Darrell Bigelow, and the Sun Devils bowed to Utah 21-6 in their own stadium. On November 12 Utah hosted defending WAC champions BYU and hit them with everything they had, including a successful tackle eligible touchdown pass to Merlin Driggs. The Cougars met the challenge, however, and crushed their neighbors 35-13. From that point it was all downhill as Mike Giddings' injury-plagued gridders lost squeakers to powerful Utah State and pass-happy Texas Western. In the Astrodome, Houston, the nation's top offensive team, caught the Redskins agog at the indoor facilities as they came from behind to grab a 34-14 win. Gaining WAC honors during the season were Ben Woodson and Rich Tate, Backs of the Week, and Pat McKissick, Tom Hawkes and John Stipech, Linemen of the Week. Both Stipech and McKissick were invited to Bowl games. The Washington State defender is too late as Terry Baker crosses into the endzone for a touchdown. 158 |
