"The Subject Was Roses," which was a success on Broadway as is shown by its winning of such theatrical awards as the Pulitzer Prize, the New York Drama Critics' Circle Award, the Outer Circle Critics' Award, the Antionette Perry Award, and others, was also a success on the Pioneer Memorial stage. It starred Jack Albertson, who created the role on Broadway. Mr. Albertson has had a long and successful career ranging from vaudeville to Hollywood movies, television series, and stage plays. He won the Antionette Perry Award for his performance in this production on Broadway. Jack Albertson's wife in the play was portrayed by Gail Longden Hickman who came from a family of actors and has been in many other University productions. The part of the son was taken by Tony Geary, a University student. The story of the play is that of a young soldier returning from World War II and finding that he has trouble communicating with his parents because he has grown up while away at the war. The appeal of the play is that it is so human that one can see someone he knows in it. John and Nettie have a discussion at the dinner table John gives his wife a playful hug. 119 |
