Show 11. Section 4. Industries. During the first part of the present year I made complete canvass of the different homes upon the reservation, together with the assistance of the fauraers and the field matron, and the employees of the Allen Day School, securing a list of the needs upon each Indian ranch and in each Indian hibme. Also data was obtained regarding the amount of agricultural land under cultivation and what would be necessary to put more of each allotment in a productive condition; the present amount fences and the necessary fencing as should be extended; the repairs on buildings and new buildings necessary and also what funds and what arrangements could be made in each case, in order to bring about a larger cultivated area and better ranch and home conditions. This information has enabled me to deal with the individual cases more independently and to accomplish better results. The Necessity of more hay land in order to insure sufficient forage for the Indian stock throughout the winter has been- impressed upon each Indian, and as a result two thousand pounds of alfalfa seed was sowed over and above the amount asked for upon the reimbursable seed allowance making in all something like 3500 pounds. The Southern Utes at the present time see the benefit of good plowing and tillage and are anxious to secure tools and implements that compare favorably with the surrounding white ranches. Where grain was formerly sown broadcast an"! plowed in the Indians now use practical grain seeders that sow a uniform and at a uniform depth and insures a more certain crop. |
