Show Iheir sole vice along the line of intoxicants, has been the purchase of extracts but by constant effort the sale of these extracts to the Southern Utes has practically been eliminated. Gambling is practiced to a very slight extent by these Indians at some of their social gatherings, such as Sundays and Holidays. It is a pasttime for pleasure more than profit, and very little money or any other valuables are ever involved. Upon several occasions where it has come to my attention that a particular Indian has been in the practice of inviting his friend to his home and that they have gambled, I have called this Indian and others to the Office and talked the matter over with them, showing them the evils coming from such a practice and in nearly every case have been able to persuade them to discontinue it, which they have done. On account of the few social pleasures in the lives of these Indians it appears that this has been a natural outgrowth. » During the present year I have organized an Indian ball team and have played several games with the teams in the surrounding country. I ^ believe that this is one means of entertainment for the Utes and that it supplies a need and will act as an offset for more harmful past times. |
