The general health of the Southern Utes is good* During the past year we have been visited with the nation- wide epidemic of influenza, which took a toll of thirty- three from this tribe. That practically includes those who actually died from the epidemic and others from the after effect or from some other causes. The general sanitary coiditions on the reservation are being made from year to year. During the past year much advancement has been made in the home life, by construction of houses which have been framed structures, substantially built with good floors and ample windows. Screens have been placed upon windows and doors; large roomy porches eight feet wide and long enough to accommodate at least two beds have been added to the housas. This feature is particularly liked by the Indian and I am constantly receiving requests for screen porches to be built upon the older houses on the reservation. This furnishes the best sleeping quarters the greater part of the year. All cases of trachoma are brought to the attention of the resident physician and those which are too advanced or too v complicated for his treatment are brought to Durango, to a spec-i l i s t and very good results are being obtained. The Indians take very kindly and are anxious for the treatment for their eyes. • 7e have no hospital at this Agency. All cases which demand hospital attention are taken to Durango, which is twenty- five miles distance and which has two good hospitals. The field matron together with the physician have accomplished very great results in saving the lives of many babies during |
