If salt water is inhaled, the salt causes fluid from the body to enter the lung tissue displacing the air. "Fresh" is an interesting way of thinking about the dark water in that cave, which might have been a mining shaft. The water actually did feel fresh in the sense that it felt refreshing on the skin and in the lungs-a more concentrated feeling than water in the lake. It felt as though night itself had been frozen and then dripped into that cave-melted enough to pass as liquid but not standard water. Bluing of lips and skin, abdominal distenion and vomiting.
