Show 161 "Any of them leading the pack so far?" "Marines, probably." It didn't surprise me that Steve had some regret about not going on a mission when he was nineteen, and I knew Tamara had been pushing marriage for a while. I think Steve wanted to marry her, too, but he wanted to marry her as someone better than he currently was. He had talked about joining the military a few times over the years, but I didn't realize how close he was to committing to the Marines. Because I would miss him, I didn't want him to do any of the three. Steve lifted his head and said he felt better and asked if I was ready to go back inside. I wanted to talk to him more and remembered that inside there were many more obligatory arm-around-the-shoulder gestures waiting for me, so I asked Steve if he wanted to go for a walk. He thought about it and said all right. We walked up the hill that the University of Utah is built on all the way up to the Legacy Bridge, the bridge that connected the university to the dorms. I liked that bridge-liked the way the cables that held it up looked like spider webs, the way TRAX ran underneath it, and the view it provided of the city, especially at sunrise or night. "So you're graduating soon. Why don't you just stay? Get a job like normal?" I asked. He said, "I'm not sure if that's going to work." "What do you mean?" |
