(Even Austin Parks fought with Jesus?) Then later, after reading Paradise Lost, I wondered how I had resisted Satan's charm and rhetoric. The visitor's center at Antelope Island does its best to make the island look like a tourist-friendly place, showcasing idyllic beach potential in a photo that looks as red and apocalyptic as the lake itself, with static humans scattered throughout, and unfortunate bird shit right off-center. A small amount of dissolved salts, leached from the soil and rocks, is deposited in Great Salt Lake every year by rivers that flow into the lake. About two million tons of dissolved salts enter the lake each year by this means. An obvious but still interesting fact: our bodies are composed mostly of water. We touch and absorb water every day from necessity. Water fascinates and delights us. This is not to speak too universally-but I do think there is a simultaneous terror and delight in the way we perceive water, whether that's a hotel pool or Green River, and perhaps above all else it's a sense of wonder. My father wasn't a playful man but he used to take us with him to irrigate my grandmother's back lawn when she was alive.
