Show simon Frank 6-29 p.22 s L I have aa ./_....;:... ____;,_ ..._ . __ I am an Am~ican first. Belonging to the Jewish religion. That I think as religions go is as good if not better than mostJ other than the B - hai. I think that's a great relgion. The gaf hai religion is '--- ~ great~- I consider myself a goodJewJwihtout being religious or involved with many of the affairs now that I used to be. I used to -- I toldyou --6~... ery active. My children are now. My daughter and her husband. Are still quite active infhe temple, synagogue, whatever they call it. But I think those people who are ashamed to be Jewish, and many of whom I know quite well, that's been to their own destruction. And don't -- they don't comm~nd the respect thatin their ~rious communities that we've alway shad f here. For example, one of the real fine/wealthiest family~ ~ in UtahJ The Bambergers~ Thecne son was defeated for United States Senator. I've forgotten what y4D\ it was, And • the reason he lost was he didn't admit to being a Jew,And I think that defeated him. Not only the --did he not have the supprt of the few Jewish families that were here, ~ ~e only had about maybe 400 families, that's what, 2000 people and say there were 800 voters) that's 800 votes is pretty J~ • But I tfuink people just didn't repsect him-not feF the fact that if you wanted to change, but not to deny your heritage is I think a showing of weakness and a'lck of integrity. What does it mean 00 be a good jew without being a ritualistic jew in that religious sense. S Gee, I don't know. It's sort of feeling of, I say, the only prejudice I still a have is intermarriage as far as my own chldren are concerned. I will admit faft£kfrankly I wouldbe very unhappy if it comes to the point that one of them does marry a Christian. L Why unahppy with that. ts I dent know. I think the chances of a good life, of being of the same mi~ture,.., ~t'ijj;.~:,_,; is better than a --than--marrying the opposite. For example, let's say ~"""')" S~h/ ,tl'\lflrlt,·~ quarrel, you know .s ~ ~ ../ /k- ~ quarreJ!A people have, many of them are about 7 II very little things. So having a quarrel and then if o,, ne says to the other, that's the trouble with you bee ause you're a god damn jew. And that--that's not as if being exaggerated, I'm sure that happens plenty of times. And so the chances of their succeeding in a marriage which are very slim to begin with these days, what is it 50% divorce - is magni fied by that additional factor. L You had been involved at some time, i?•nai Israel. You and Joe rosenblatt. S The congregation. We had a very small clique who really ran the place. L What years . . 1''~ s Oh, I haven't been active now for 20 years. Let's see. A 77 and I was elected to the board about the dge of 2~ so that's 50 years ago. ~fingle handedly, I -- we had J~ debt--when! say~ paid off the debt, I gathered everybody together |
