Show Simon Frank Continued 6-29 p. 20 (side 3lbeginning) L You saidbeforeyou disliked orthodoxy.... ~ S That's being very generous. I despise Orthodoxy. Or I hate it of any kind. We were in Israel and I just wantedto see it. And the control that first thing of all, most of the Israelis are irreligious ... as far asadending the synagogue is concerned, and I guess in many things. But I was so annoyed with the control that a handful of old Grthodox, ~binnical people had on the customs and the ancient customs of Orthodoxy and Judaism, which at that time was all right. For example, kosher food. Or pork and what have you. In the days when they didn't know how to cure food and that sort of thing, there was some sense to it. But not in this day and age of civiliation. So you achieve with the times, I would think. And I was so annoyed with that. And so when we we were in Haifa, my sister-in-law, my wife's sister was with us. And so I got up and I said, " kids, I'm going down to the airline, the first airline office, I'm taking the first plane that's going out of here, wherever it's fl going, we're going to be on it. And thank goodness, it was going to Switzerland. And so --where we had been many times. I think I tol~ou that .... And anyway, I said, I don't know if Switzerland was --but it really is, it's beautiful and clean and fresh and delicious as I thought it was. That particular trip--we hadn't left Israel. And --but, I wouldn't mind goingback to Israel just on a helicopter and go once over lightly just to see what changes have been made and then fly right out. Because there--some of their atittiudes don't appeal to me at all. I feel no sense of kinship just because they're members of the Jewish religion. I mean, that' doesn't mean anything to me • And some of the arrogance that they have. Youknow the Mormons have accomplished the same thingirlJtah- they think they've acmomplished overthereandlong before when it was much more difficult ~$ than--as then in these later years. But I don't want to minimize or take away wha tthey did but--if they just had little humility ~Hseeee-e~-~fie about it and not the arrogance about it that they show. L What were your feelings when the stateof Israel first took place, whenfue movement towards zionism. S I never approved of i:ionism at all. And Israel as a nation,~Js,theyWfre pretty much abused. I thought th~twas fair. But on that basis, but not on the basis of ]ionism, which I never did approve of or like. And ;j as I say, I have no kinship, feeling of kinship1 towards ta&t sort of thing.~nd obviously they had, ~ belong to the same religion as I do--which I still consider a religion, not a race as many people do. And there were allknds of~ ~ I dent have anything to do with. Not because they aren't perfeclty 1 nice people. |
