And then after the --this world depression came along a'wonderful'man by the name of Hitler that changedmany people's lives that you know. That was the first time I knew there was such a thing eahtsrl~- anti-semitism. ANd so put them all together and I'dsay there were very few, what I'd consider, really good ftfe normal clean living in my youth/ But since then, we have-- I guess other than the fact that I'm a very dull guy to live with ..... I think .. from my wife's point of view. ,, ... L It must have been very hard for you at the age of 12 to be thrown in with 17 ... g18 guys. S I ra~fier--- It really wasn't. I rather enjoyed it. L WHat other kindsof things did you feel that you had to do-- S Oh, other than smoking•! don't remember--because I ¢went --my gang, for lack of a better expression, were fairly close to my age that I got to be friends, life time friends1with many of those older kids that I knew before they went away and as I say otherwise I wouldn't have been in rl ~ ~ contact with that-- close contact that I had with them. No,I was influenced primarily by me. And L What kind of things did they talk about, some of these guys who had been inthe war. S I honestly don't have the vaguest recollection. Let's see, that's 1918. A That's 64 years ago and I wish I were remembered ... I was in many things then eatthat, you know, obviously seemed important in those days .... recollect that now wouldbe very interesting, I wish I had that kind of intellect. L You can't recall things they said about the war •...• S Not really, No. I mean, when you think of that you think of movies that you saw. L Do you know the movies you sw as a teenager. S Oh, gee, they were stupid movies. Fatty Arbuckle. And of course Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford. And I've forgotten all the names. Mae West was after ..• The great--the great ----- western guy was But i we thought they were great movies. One of the g:-eatest impressions made t.,.t.-r~-~~- ·-L ~ ,_ picutre of Jl Fatty Arbuckle who was a comedian. A very good comedian. And also another very good human being eft&-fi~s inhis liftime. By that I mean he wouldn't haven't gotten any medals for sainthood1but in this one movie where they arrived in a Ford automobile |
