Show Simon Frank 6-28 p.7 L s L $ L s L s q L right now, part time. 3-4 days a week. And I say, alms t every store in town, that we bought. That was ~ .~- ~ ~' the only store left--and not that this is a privately own ed store, but we run it like it is, tf we sold out to in 1960, but still we run it autonomously and I forget very often that I don't own it anymore 1 excep~~~ith relief and gratefulness that I don't)because the business has changed completely from--we used to have a II good time. We had a store family and a famil~&nd those people who worked for us were part of our store family. We were never , oh, bosses and employeesJalthough we were; it the same time, we were veyr close. We were there if they needed money ~ if they need ed help, if they needed this--or sickness or whatever, they were treated like thefamily. And as I say, the only--I don't recall but very very few people who left us before they died. And that was from ~anitors up--window d . 1 1 ~-+ c... ~spay peop e, ... ~ How was that displayed, the feeling of being a store family? It just comes quite naturally. Yes . Yes. We would have no. 1, store anniversaries in which their wives were invted and Christmas parties to which their wives were invited -- we had a very stupid thing--each--everybody who had a birthday would have to buy a bottle of whiskey so that went on G) ":;· . - . 'i 20 years 25 --and so there was alot of closeness in --not socially. We didn;t socialize really except in those ¢ things. But still we were very very close add knew all the familie• very well. Did you have mormons working .. Oh, did we ever.-- our ~f shop still is and was then. But the so-called foreman of the tailor shop--he wouldn't hire anybody but a mormon~ Jlf the greatest tailor in the world came in for free. And most of the people were Mormons. Did they also bring the bottle. Oh, sure, sure. That's, as I say, almost a lush but that's the only guy.And he'd look at you straight that's the hypocrisy. one we had. And he in th e eye, ~fth- / .l., We have one was also a guy who's sanctamonious hadn't been there for two days and ~ drunk. And looked at youstraight inthe eye and he'd say, "You know, I eve~ never --I never take a drink .. " Who do you think you're kidding~ But then we had highly intelligent, capable people, almost as a matter of fact, most of them had been inbusiness ~ at one time by themselves and as I say, we'd bought them out in most cases. And then they'd come to work for us. II What did your dad attribute all his success to? y I think just sort of intuitive, I guess. and then don't forget he had me. That was the biggest part ihis success. He was a good merchant intuitively. |
