Show Diabetes Mellitus (ICD-9Code: 250) (1994 Total Deaths in Utah =338) After a decline in the 1970s, mortality rates due to diabetes mellitus began to rise in both Utah and the United States. However, the United States' rate of increase is slowing while Utah's rate increased dramatically until 1993. The higher rate in Utah may be explained in part by genetics, exercise patterns or eating habits. It should be noted that a change in death certificate procedures in 1989 may have substantially contributed to this increase. Table 42. Diabetes Mortality by Sex in Utah* Table 43.
