SAN JUAN RIPER SETTLERS-NAVAJO RESERVATION, NEW -CO. ' A clause in the Indian appropriation act approved June 29, 1889(26 Stat., 231), provides as follows: The snm of ten thouaand dollar^, or so much thereof asmay deneoessary, is hereby ltppropristed to enable the Secretary of the Interior to pay the setr.lers who, in good faith, made settlement in township twenty-nine north, ranges fourteen, fifteen, and sixteen west of the New Mexioo principal meridian, in the Territory of New Mexico, prior to May first, eighteen hundred and eighty-six, for their improvements and for damages snst,ained by reason of the inolusion of said townships within\the Navajo Reservation by Executive order of April twentyfourth, eighteen hundred and eighty-six, and snob settlem may make other homestead, preemption, and timber-cultore entries as if theg had never made settlements within said township? By directionof the Department an investigation of the claims ofset-tlers under this law wasmade by a special agent of tbis Bureau (George W. Gordon) in Way last. His report and findings, with one exception, were approved by the Department September 2,1889, and the fund will be distributsd to'claimants accordingly. BOUNDARIES OP THE WARN SPRINGS RESERVATION, OEECION. The question of the disputed location of the nor,thern boundary of this reservation, to which reference was made in the last annual re-port, was finally determined by the Department, July 19,1889, by the adoption of the line as survejed by John A. McQuinn in 1887, this be. ing the line insisted upon by the Indians as being in accordance with the provisions of their treaty. Directions have been given for the survey of the western boundary of the reservation. TI'~BER OPEEATIONS ON RESERVATIONS IN WISCONSIN. La Poiltte Agency.-As indicated in the last annual report, full in-structions were given Agent Gregory, October 29,1888, regarding the sale of pine timber on the reservations nuder his charge, said instrno-tions containing the following clause: It must be distinctly understood that no operations osn be commenced until pon are notified that the aantraot ha8 been approved by this office, and that no contracts , should be made for the sale of timher npon tracts where the,allotments have not been approved by the President. He had previously (October 22, 1888) been inatrnoted by telegraph , as follows : Forward ta-day all contracts between Indiana and eontraotora for ontting timber that are on file in yoor afaae or under your control, and which have not bean sp- |
