Show 36 REPORT OF THE. ~ ' 0 ~ ~ 1 8 O8F 1IN0DI~AN~ A~ F FAIRS. appmisement of the strip of land, 100 feet in width, now occupied by the Cedar Rapids, Iowa Falls and Northwestern Railway Uompany, , ' over and across the Red Pipestone Indian Reservation in the State of Minnesota, as well as the damige to the remaiuder of the lands of said reservation caused by soch railroad occnpatfon, and provides that said railroad company ''shall be entitled to enter and purchase the aforesaid strip of land of the width aforesaid, now occupied by its road. bed, by paying the amount so assessed as the value thereof, together with the amount of damages assessed as aforesaid." The third section of the act prorides that the act shall takeeffect and be in force and .authorize the entry and sale of said right, of way so soon as, and not until, a majority of the adult male Iudiansof the Yankton tribe of Sioux Indians shall consent to the entry and sale of such right. of way, eto. , , The lands included in said right of yay were appraised in May lmt by a commission appointed for that purpose at $1,060, and the damages resulting from the construction of the road at $680; total, $1,740. Subseqnently a con~missionw as appointed to procure t,he reqnired consent of the Indians. As already stated in another portion of this report, although the Indians declined to assent to certain other provis-ions of the act, they consented. and agreed to the entry and sale of the tract embraced within the right of way. WHITE EARTH Ah-D LEEOX LAKE RBBBRVATIOINN MSI,N NESOTA. ~oor i e adL, eech Lake, Duluth and Nortnern Railway.-The act of Jan- , nary 16,1889 (25 Stat., 647, and page 425 of this report), grants to the Moorhead, Leech Lake, Duluth and Northern Railway Compmy the right of way throngh the White Earth Indian Reservation in the State of Minnesota. No steps appear to have been taken by the railroad. oompany to secure the benefits of said act. No maps have been filed nor survey made. St. Paul, illinneapolis and Manitoba Rai1,way.-The act of February 25,1889 (25 Stat., 696, and page 435 of this report), grants to the St. Panl, Minneapolis and Manitoba Railway Company the right of way through the White Earth Re,servation. No steps appear to have been taken by said railway company to avail itself of the grant. No maps of deaite location have been filed nor any survey made so far as is known to this office. DuZutW and Win~ipeg Railway.-The act of March 2,1889 (25 Stat., 1010, and page 462 of this report), grants to the Dulnth and Winnipeg ~ a i l kCso~m pany the right of way for the extensiou of its railroad through the Leech Lake and White Earth Indian Reservations in the.
