Before the receipt of the above report by this office the following tel-egram came from the agent, announcing that the opposition to the plow-ing had been carried to the extent of making a personal assault on him-self: . . HAYT, Conrmisaioater, #0., Washington, D.C.: Sm: I have been assaulted by a leading chief, Johnson, forced out of my own house, and injnred badly, but was riscued by employ&. It is now revealed that Johnson originated all the trouble stated in letter September 8. His 80n ahot at the plowman, , and the opposition to plowing is wide. The telegram was received late Saturday evening, and on Monday morning, September 15, at the request of this office, the War Depart? ment ordered by telegraph that '<the nearest military commander to the agency detail a sufficient number of troops to arrest such Iudiau chiefs as me insubordinate, and enforce obedience to the requirements af the agent, and aflord him such protection as the exigency of the case requires; also, that the ringleaders be held as prisoners until an inves-tigation can be had." On the same day the office telegraphed Agent Meeker: War Department has been requested to send troops for your proteotion. To which he replied on the 22d: Gmernor Pitkin writes, eavallry on the way. Diapatoh of 15th will be obeyed. On the 22d of September the office received the following telegram from the honorable Secretary of the Interior, relative to the arrest of two Indians against whom warrants had been issued: , . Agent Meeker should be inetruoted to have them arrested and turned over to civil authori-ties; efforts should also be d e to identify Indians'having set f i e to forests outside of reservation. On the 23d Agent Meeker was inshncted by this office as follows: Secretary telegraphs from Denver that two Ute Indisns, Bennett and Chinaman, hsve been identified as having burned down citizens' house3 outside of reservetion. Warrants are out against them. Agent Meeke~ should be instructed to arrest and turn them over to oivil authorities; illso, to identi$ and arrest Indians having set fires to forests.
