Mineral salt.-The mineral or rock salt, of which a specimen is • ,laced in the Congress Library, ·was found in the place marked by 3aron Humboldt in his map of New Spain, (northern half,) as deived from the journal of the missionary Father Escalante, who atempted, towards the close of the last century, to penetrate the .nknown country from Santa Fe, of New Mexico, to Monterey, of he Pacific ocean. The adventurous missionary does not seem to ave got farther, and that ·was a great deal at that time, than ~e south end of the Utah lake, called Lake Timpanogos-a term lgnifying Rock river. Southeast of that lake is the chain of the V' ah-satch mountains, constituting in that place the· rim of the freat Basin.' In this mountain, at the place where Humboldt bas ·ritten "Montagnes de Sel Gemme," (Rock Salt mountain,) · this tineral is found·. Its locality, th~ head waters of a small creek, ·ibutary to the Utah lake, on its southeast, in thick strata of red lay. The crystallized sal_t, formed from the spray of the lake onwbatver it touches-plants, shrubs, &c.,-and of which a specimen is I so in the Congress Library, was taken from the southeastern shore f. the Great Salt la~e. That specimen shows a formation of more han an inch thick of pure crystallized salt on the stem of a small wig, less than the size of a common goose quill. |
