Show APPENDIX TO PART L tbree years, with an astonishing spirit of enterprise and perseverance, passed 0 ,·e t· all that e:xtcn::;ive and unknown countr~. J li-; estal~li~hment, although not splenc\icl, (the mode of travcl llttg- not admll llng it) was su r h, ,1s to admit of the most unlimited cqwnces in every thing IH:ccssary to t,cilitate his enquiries ; and he is now engaged in tli hcsting the import~ nt r 'suits or his ente rprise. I find from the ob~c rvations and su g;~cstion s of .Mr. Tho mp~;on, that when at the source or the l\!is~i$~;ippi, it was his opinion the line of limits between the Uni ted States and Creal Briwiu, rnu st run such a course, from the head of the lake of the \Yoods, a::; to touch the source of the l\1issi <>sippi; and this I cl iscoYcrcu to he the opinion of the north west con1pany, whom, we mny suppose, or reasonably conclude, speal the lan gu a~;e held forth by their government. The aLlmis~ion of this pretension, "ill throw out of our territory all the upper part of Red river, and nrarly two fifths of the territory of Louisiana. \'Vhereas, if the li11e l.Je run due west from the heucl of the lake of the \Voods, it will cross Reel river nearly at the entrance or Heed river, and il is conjectured strike the western ocean at Birch Bay, in Queen Cha1·lottc Sound. Those difl'ercnces or opinion, it is pre· surnetl, mi~-;ht be ea!;i ly adjusted bet ween the two governments, ut the present day, but it i-; believed that de lays by unfolding the true value of the countt y, may produce dif1iculties, which do not at present c~ist. The north \\'CSt company, have made establishments at several places on the south side of Lake Superior, and on the bead waters of the l'i el'S Sautcau:x and St. Croix, wl1ich discharge themselves into the Mississippi. The first l met with on the voyage up, was at Lower Red Ccclal' Lake, about one hundred and fifty miles, above the Isle cle Corl'cau, being· on the eusl side of the river, and distant thu·cft·om six miles. it is situated on the north point of the lake, and con::,ists of lo~ buildings, fl anked by picketed bastions on two of its an~lcs. The next establishment I met with, was situated on andy Lake ; for a description of which, see document marked A . Midway between Sandy Lake t~ncl Leech Lake, is a small house not worthy of notice. On the south west side ofthe latter lake, from the ontl ct of the 1\lissis<iippi, stand the head quurtcrs of the Fond du Lac clcpcntment; for information relative to which, have rcfel'· cncc to dflcument marked B.t IIere rcs1des the director or this depat'lnH'nt.
