Having fpcnt a confidcra le time on the Table Rock, we returned to the flclds the fame way by which we had dcfccndcd, purfuant to the direction of the officer of engineers accompanyino- us, who was intimat ly acquainted with ev ry part of the cataraCl:, and of th adjoining ground, and was, perh:~ps, the befi guide that could be procured in the whole country. It would be poOiblc to purfuc your WJY along the edge of the cliff, from the Table Rock, a confiderablc way downwards; but the bui11es arc fo exceedingly thick, and the ground fo rugged, that the taO~ would be arduous in the extreme. The next fJ?ot. from which we furveyed the falls, was from the part of the cliff nearly oppofite to that end of the Fort Schloper Fall, which lies next to the ifland. You fhnd here, on the edge of tbe cliff, behind fomc buil1es, the tops of which have been cut down in order to open the view. From hence you have a better profpcc:t of th whole cataraCl:, and arc cnallcd to form a more cor!:'cCl: idea of the pofition of the precipice, than from any one other pbce. Th profpctl: from hence is more beautiful, bnt I think kfs grand than· from any other fpot. The oHiccr who fo politely directed onr movements n th is occafion was fo flruck with the view from this fpot, that he o 1cc had a wood ·n boule confiruCl:cd, an l r:1.wn down here by oxen, in wh ;ch he lived until he had finiD1cd fevcral difrcrcnt drawings of the cataract: one of thcfc we w 'te gratified v:ith the fight of, which exhibited a vi w of the cataraCt in the depth of \Vinttr, when m a moil: curious anJ wondtrful ilate. The ice at this feaion or· the year accumul. ates at the bot om of the rat.1ratt in immenfc mound , and hu_Gc icicles, like the pillars of a maify building, hang pendent in many p ace from the top of the precipice, reaching nearly to the hottom.
