Show PRESIDENT'S LETTER "Where shall I begin, please your majesty?" he asked. "Begin at the beginning," the king said, grave ly, "and go on • t il you come to the end: then stop. " (White Rabbit to the King of Hearts) Well, here I am at the beginning of term. The beginning, Annual Meeting, has taken place. The end seer.1s my a long way away. But, as I begin this long journey, I cm pleased to find that been provided with the best equipmeDt for compl eting it: a marvelousI have Board , an exciting Program, a~d one or two challenges to keep us all on our toes. The Board this year is made up of a good ination of experienced and new members. The majo rity of t hem \\!Ork outsi decomb the --many even get paid !-- , . and the varie ty of inter ests and backgrounds is imprhome essiv e. I am reall y looking forward to working with this wonderful group of women ~ The local Program adopted at Annual Meeting was purposely limit ed to two studies to avoid burdening our finances and woma n-pow er. But what timel y and exciting studies they are! One \till be a study of capital impro veme nt needs and financing within Salt Lake County, the other will be a study of academic standards in local seco~dary education. Stephanie Loker, the Planning and Zoning Chair, Educ ation Chai r are both forming committees to begin and Shawna Jackson* the work on these studies this summer. Please contact them (Stephanie - 359-1675 535-7955 (w}; Shawna - 266-3359) or the League offic e if you would like(h), to work on eithe r study. I would especially like to urge members who have never worke d on a study to consider parti cipat ing. You do not need to be an expe rt t6 help with a study--but it is a great way to become one! r And \,hat are the challenges? They aren but they are -just as cha11en~ing as ever! The first is membership't. new, This des not only gaining new members, but retaining those we have. Our goal isinclu to ase our total membership by 10% this year--and you can help by introducinincre g one or two friends to the League this Fall. The second chal1enge, as always, is finance. In addition to a $2.00 cost of Per Member Payments (PMP) to the State and National Leagv~s, we are also planning to apply for more gra~ts to pay for our studies a~d Veter Sarv1ce activ ities . incre ase in d·.ie~ to cover the A1thoug h Leac;;ue me<':!t ings ce,1se ov~r the sur.imer, League work continues i'l preparation for the Fall. I think this y~ar will be an inter estin League. In the mearitime, I hope you all have a wonderful summ g one in er! =============================================================================== The Salt Lake VGTER Summer/83 / |
