The store features corbeled brick work and an original recessed entry with transoms and side picture windows. It is a good example of a nineteenth-century country store. few of which remain today The first trading post in Wales was a wagon load of various necessities brought in by John Price about 1859. He kept these goods in boxes under his bed for safety. People traded their produce for his supplies. which Price then took to town and traded for more goods . In 1871. settlers started a cooperative store. with each man contributing five dollars to send a wagon to Salt Lake City for groceries. Jonathan Midgley was hired to manage this co-op in connection with a post office. He received a commission of seven-and-one-half percent on the goods he sold. Everything was bought in small quantities and sold by the ounce. In 1874. the co-op and post office were taken over by John Price. who managed them until his death. Then a small adobe store was erected where this store now stands. with Henry D. Rees as manager. In 1894 the Wales Co-op was enlarged and incorporated with a capital stock of ten thousand dollars. Two thousand shares of stock were issued and sold at five dollars a share. The Wales Co-op thrived until about 1968. •• •• •• •• •• •• •• •• •• •• •• •• •• •• .. |
