At the special congregational meeting on Tuesday, 7 March 1899, the president of the board, Charles L. Baum, called the meeting to order, and Dr. Henry A. Whitney offered the following constitutional amendment: "The church year of the First Unitarian Society of Salt Lake City, Utah, shall begin on the first Tuesday of March, 1899, and that the annual meeting of said society shall be held in conformity there with." The new church year thus began that very day and, consequently, the annual meeting was to be held that day. Since a trustee was voted to serve for the duration of a church year and a new year had begun that day, the office of trustee had just become vacant. To make this official, Whitney moved that the church offices be declared vacant, and this was was The previous board of trustees in this fashion completely abolished.
